New Member August 2015

Post by OldFogey55 » Sat Aug 01, 2015 7:36 am

Located in Sydney (Oz)
Retired last Xmas and after seven months hard labour in the garden addressing 27 years of neglect I think I can justify treating myself to a P4

Been to look at a 110S for AUD4K asking price, which was disappointing. Didn't look too bad, in the photos but which was quite nasty in the metal - speedo and most of the instruments didn't work; tappets rattled like Keith Moon on the cymbals; battery would not hold a charge and needed jump-starting; engine was oily, rad dripped water; interior and exterior were rougher than the pictures would have me believe. Against that, it had a new (aluminium !) fuel tank and all the door/window rubbers had been replaced.

Going to Melbourne next week to see a 75 Cyclops which looks OK in the ad (http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Rover-P4-1951/SSE-AD-3200675/?Cr=0 ) but photos can be deceptive

Hello OldFogey55,
The Cyclops in Melbourne has been advertised off and on for quite some time, and no takers. Suggest approach with caution. It might be that the price is putting people off, but there could be other problems.

I would suggest contacting/joining the Rover P4 Guild of Australia. They sometimes have some interesting cars listed for sale
https://roverp4guildaustralia.wordpress.com/ They also have a Facebook page with interesting items. Another source would be the Rover Car Club of Australia in the 'Car Mart' section. http://rovercarclubaust.asn.au/ There is also a NSW Rover club that could be of help to you.

Good luck on your hunt,
Dane.

Gents
Just to finish this off. I looked at the Melbourne Cyclops and didn't like it. I picked up the 105S "Sydney s**tbox" on the grounds that it may be nasty, but it's cheap and has a new pink slip (and now has a new battery), so I should be able to actually drive it round in between sorting out its shortcomings

If I haven't made a mess of this, I've set up an Album in Photobucket showing a couple of dozen photos
Open a new window in your browser (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome etc) and paste the link below into the address bar

http://s612.photobucket.com/user/gillardh/library/105S

This should take you the Album, and if asked for a password it will be OldFogey55-105S

The photos are:
0001 Front quarter view (Car is sprayed in cans of Duplicolour Arctic White)
0002 Badges claim it is a 105S …
0003 …but the compliance plate number 611800801 is for a 1958 RHD Export 90
0004 What are these hollow bolts – one on each B pillar ?
0005 Fuel filler showing rust, poor filling and poor painting
0006 More poor paint
0007 Overspray on LHS rear lamp
0008 Overspray on the drivers seat
0009 Usual wear on the surface of the instrument panel
0010 Appalling wood butchery on the panel between the instrument panel and the glove box
0011 Driver’s door showing wear to lower door trim
0012 Heater pipe – showing valve missing
0013 Engine was steam cleaned for the pink slip inspection
0014 Wiring is showing signs of age
0015 Firewall showing tired underseal (?) and indifferent painting
0016 Woodwork on the doors has been stripped, varnished and poorly reassembled
0017 Carpet shows extensive wear on drivers side. Gear leaver gaiter missing
0018 Front seats may have been reupholstered in vinyl and some sort of trim. (Rear seats are slightly different colour)
0019 Front seats are quite respectable except for this large wear mark on the driver’s seat
0020 Headline is fine (replaced ?) grab handles reupholstered. Trim on edge of door pillars replaced
0021 Rear of passenger seat. (New) elastic could have been tighter
0022 Passenger door, showing filler (loose)
0023 On the firewall PFRS 038432 What does this represent? Engine number (not shown) is 621800235
