'38 12-HP Distributor...

Hello all,

I just wondered if anyone could tell me which model/type of Lucas distributor my '38 Rover 12 is fitted with please?

I ask, as I'd like to fit a basic electronic ignition kit instead of the points/condenser etc - only, I have them fitted to a few of my other classics and I've always been very happy with them...plus, I have a fairly long journey planned in her in June (10-day tour of Normandy) so I'd like to get them fitted & sorted, sooner rather than later!

Please post a reply when you have identified and successfully fitted your electronic ignition unit. It would be great to know of a unit that would be suitable for my '37 12 Tourer.

Tony - Re: your request mate...I've been in-touch with with a guy on ebay - who goes by the user-name 'Simon-BBC'

He makes electronic ignition kits (and has supplied me with a few now and they've all been great!) he said that its no problem at all to make/ supply a kit for the Rover 10 & 12's...the only thing he needs to know is if the car is still positive (+) earth or if it has been converted to negative (-) earth, as he can supply either...

His only 'proviso' is that the car will need to be fitted with suppressed HT-leads if an electronic kit is fitted - however, he can also supply these with screw-in fittings for our distributor-cap's should we need them...???

I'm not sure of any prices yet, but going by his previous kits as supplied to me, I'd EXPECT an electronic conversion kit to cost somewhere in the region of £50.00-£80.00 + P&P...but that is a complete guess!

I have tested Ultraspark products on my Rover 10 engine. They have two versions: one for negative earth, and one, more expensive, for positive earth. Both work very well – no need for suppressors of any kind. See here http://wp.me/pXLKy-17b .
Ultraspark has also a complete electronic distributor to replace DKY4A – only for negative earth. It has no mechanical advance (which is the weakest part of the DKY4A) but uses a digital advance box. I have tested them too, with very nice results which are presented here: http://wp.me/pXLKy-2ht
Before that, I had measured the advance curve of the engine, using a freshly reconditiond DKY4A by Distributor Doctor (very expensive....) which was used as a reference. The results are given here: http://wp.me/pXLKy-2cR
