1934 Rover 12 voltage regulator

I have had the engine running for the first time.There is an output from the dynamo,but the ign light fails to go out.How do I check the voltage regulator.I am wondering whether to replace the dynamo,with an alternator so cutting out the old voltage regulator.Has any other member done this on this or similar models Len
