Dex,

The oil 'filter' is a gauze sleeve that fixes over the pick-up from the oil pump in the sump. It is accessed from the off side of the sump - a large brass hexagonal head. Once unscrewed from the sump it should be washed in paraffin or petrol, then refitted before filling the engine with oil.
The oil isn't filtered, as such, on these early engines. Unlike modern oils that hold particulates in suspension, the SAE 30 it was designed to use, allow the muck to sink to the bottom of the sump and stay there. This is why the oil was always changed regularly. Most people use a classic 20/50 oil and change it once a year - or more often if doing a lot of miles. Id say 'a lot' was over 3K. every few years the sump can be removed and the sludge cleaned out. Modern oils should not be used as they can attack some metal parts in old engines. The same is true of the gearbox, axle and steering box where classic ois are required.

The air filter is an oil soaked unit a bit like a K&N filter. It is sealed but I guess you could soak it to clean, although I don't know anyone who has actually done that. My saloon has one of these, which seems to work fine and i haven't cleaned that. My Tourer has always had open barrels, although I have looked at fitting later filters like those used on an MG.

Tony.
