Engine paint colour
Engine paint colour
Anyone know of a paint colour that matches the same colour as the factory green for the P2 engine. Closest I can find is a sort of Austin but its not right. I'm not sure if it was Mike who told me that Green was the colour for factory engine with blue to denote a rebuilt item. I guess much in the same way BMC did the Gold engines of the 60's.

Re: Engine paint colour
I'm not so sure that there is a definitive answer to this one. Like most things Rover it probably depends on what was available that week. Some engines are red, some are light blue, some are different shades of green and some are black. Also the heat from the engine tends to change the colour anyway over the years so I would just take a chip of any remaining paint to a body shop and ask them to mix something similar, it will be as right as any other.

It's quite a few years ago, but I used Comma green engine paint. It certainly wasn't far from the original on my '34 engine. I had previously bought a Hermetite green engine paint, but this turned out to be rather a strange khaki sort of colour - pretty sure it's not available now, anyway.

That awful Comma green engine paint is on mine too - it sticks well and was on before I got my P2
I had alreday used the same on my wifes Mini - its is better than most for staying on but far too vivid

I touched up some paintwork on my engine this year, I had some rather bright green engine enamel to which I mixed some black and some white until I got a reasonable match to what was already there. It worked a treat
This was a before shot with the bright green covering a new core plug

and an after shot, I only painted the rectangular area around the core plug, unfortunately the flash produces a rather odd colour but shows the colour match. Although it's not perfect is not too far away, some further mixing could of course produce a better match.
It is certainly better than what it was

Once everything else around was cleaned up it looked fine

Re: Engine paint colour
The Comma paint I used on my '34 12 (on the cylinder head) is actually quite a nice tasteful mid-green - perhaps a shade lighter than British Racing Green, but definitely not vivid! More than likely it varies from batch to batch, so perhaps I was lucky.
I've just had a check under the bonnet and it looks like a very good match for the paint on the block, which I'm pretty sure is original.

Thanks for the advice, now all I need to find out is what paint is the same as Comma Green down here in OZ. Would that be the same as the BMC green. Mind you I also like the look of the engine colour in the photos supplied by 47P2

Re: Engine paint colour
Nothing like BMC green - better to use the BMC colour IMHO!
