1935 Streamline
Re: 1935 Streamline
Hi Den,
The Streamline looks fantastic! Much better then mine when I found it. It really looks undisturbed and will make a great restoration when you get to it. I plan to pull my engine this spring and send to the UK for a complete rebuild. I have the original 3 carb manifolds but the carbs are beyond rebuilding. I contacted Burlen and they will provide a complete set for less then 1000 GBP so I will go for those. By the way I purchase a new wiring harness from Auto Sparks in the UK but it looks like My Streamline may have come with a new one so I may have a extra one I will let you know when I get into my restoration.
I will absolutly contact you when I need pictures Thanks
Did you end up with Danish Kitchner?
Dirk

Re: 1935 Streamline
Pics look great - hope these rare cars can be got going. I only just noticed that the triple carb engine is the old OHV 6 that was used in the 14's til 1939 until the later OHV 100mm engine was used as with the others.
Must have took some setting up

Re: 1935 Streamline
Hi Phil, the single-carb is also using this engine, which is the old 1933 14 Pilot engine.
Re: 1935 Streamline
Hello there Paul and other streamline owners
Paul I was very interested to see the pictures attached to your post of 12th Feb because I have a 1935 standard streamline coupe badly in need of timber work replacement at the rear and the state of your rear end aluminium looks similar to mine, hope to get round to it one day.
Out of interest on the RSR archive data base we have details of 6 1935 streamline coupes (ie non speed)
chassis no 521767 the one owned by me
chassis no 524466 last known owner Harry Johnson Yorkshire
chassis no 524500 sold at Sothebys auction 1977 no other details/ownership known
chassis no ???? exported to Belgium in the 70's no other details
2 cars owned by Mike Evans, may not be complete cars??, no note of chassis nos
I do not have a note of your car unless of course it is one of the above?? perhaps you could let me have the dets of your car to put on the database, I would suggest email/snailmail them directly to me rather than on the open forum.
Den I found your pictures very interesting also well done, I have still got to master adding photos to my posts because I still owe some to Dirk in the States.
Bonnet louvres - 1935 models had vertical louvres as per Paul's pictures and 1936 models had horizontal ones as per Den's pictures.
As far as 1936 standard streamlines there are 2 on the data base
One resides in Israel under restoration and the other is the ex Gaydon car which features on page 74 of Eric Dymock's book ''ROVER The First Ninety Years''. At some stage this was converted to a speed spec but not sure when or by whom. Not sure either where it went after Gaydon

Re: 1935 Streamline
Hello Andrew,
Thanks for posting the info from the database. My car is in fact one of the ones you list - I purchased it from Harry Johnson in November last year. If you need any more info to update your archive please let me know by PM or email - you can find my contact details in the front of Freewheel.
As I mentioned in my earlier post Harry replaced most of the wood at the back end but it all needs fitting back together. The aluminium body isn't in bad shape, its obviously had a bit of a knock on the OSR top area and there are a couple of cracks which are spreading away from the top corners of the boot opening but at the moment I don't believe this to be a big problem to sort out. I do have the boot and spare wheel cover, which you can't see in the pictures, as well as the wings. The outer rear wings have been sand blasted and painted in red oxide but need patching/ repairing where the dreaded tin worm has had a go. The fronts are still painted although the are clealy hiding a few grotty bits under old filler. They will require a thorough clean back to see what state they are really in although I know that the beading on the rolled edge has certainly fallen off at least one of them.
Den,
Good to see the pictures of your '36 speed. It seems that the standard problem with the Streamlines is the diappearing wood at the back end which seems to make them a bit floppy.
As Andrew has already mentioned the bonnet louvres are an easy give away between the '35 & '36 model years. Another difference is that the '35 front doors have quarterlights which the '36 don't. It is also interesting to see the triple carb arrangement on the speed which clearly uses 3 side draught SU's whereas mine uses a single downdraught. You can see the single carb arrangement on this picture of my engine.

My engine has certainly had some work done on it in the past, but there is some debate on the quality of what was done so it will be coming apart for inspection rather than going straight in.
It is good to see that there are at least four of us on the forum who have these cars, so hopefully we will be able to help each other out as they make gradual progress towards the road again.
Paul

Re: 1935 Streamline
Hello there Paul
I have the details of your car on the database and have now entered it under your ownership many thanks.
Out of interest I viewed this car about 30 years ago when it was for sale in the Surrey area, when I went to view the car I was shown it by a lady who said it was her car but she was very cagey about the car, its history and work that had been done. In attempting to talk money at a later date I had several phone conversations with a man who claimed it was his car and he had inflated ideas as to it's value. I suspected marital problems and decided to drop out of the negotiations. I have some photos of it outside the lock up where it was kept, I believe it was dark green at that time. I next saw it at Belvoir about 5 years later probably mid 80's on a trailer with Harry Johnson, might even have a photo of it at the rally.
It was at this time I purchased a 1935 speed 14 streamline coupe, and as you mention, surprise surprise, the rear end 'wobbled' and I had to have the woodwork in rear arches and tail rebuilt, it was affectionately known as BUF (it's Reg Letters). Whilst under restoration I took it to 2 of Mike Couldry's Belvoir rallies in the 80's, perhaps you saw it??? It also featured in several Freewheels under my ownership and then under Tony Atkins ownership, and again recently a photograph of it appeared in Freewheel at a Rover rally in Switzerland with the current owner, who I understand drove it up from Italy. Out of interest the engine was painted the same 'eau de nil' green as per the photos of your engine

Re: 1935 Streamline
Hello Den,
Have you made any progress on the Streamline yet? How about some pictures of the Kitchner? I got to see Mikes while visiting the UK this past weekend truly a great car. I should have purchase one of the 2 that have come up in the past year. I almost bought Hennings but then could not get a decent price on transport. A running one sold on ebay for around 5000 gbp earlier this year.
Hope you are well
Dirk
