Evening all from wet and windy Suffolk

Post by andrewmcg » Sun Nov 09, 2008 7:30 pm

My interest in 'running board Rovers' goes back to about 1949 when one of my uncles would visit us in a prewar Rover 14, I recall in particular the headlights, the opening windscreen and his explanation of the freewheel, very interesting to a ten year old. I purchased my first P2, a 1946 Rover 10 in 1965, drove it home from Surrey and it was a very usable second car for several years. Since then I have owned a number of P1's and P2's some of which I restored and are now in the RSR with their current owners. The 2 most interesting ones were a 1935 Speed 14 streamline coupe and a 1935 12 Tourer. The Speed 14 now resides in Italy and the 12 Tourer in Holland.
I currently own a 1933 Rover 10, a 1935 Rover 14 streamline coupe and a 1947 12 tourer all in various states of restoration which when spare time permits keeps me occupied in retirement!!!!
I also maintain the Pre-1950 'Archive database' for the RSR and am always pleased to receive photos and info on any pre 1950 Rovers particularly the rarer models.

Hello Andrew from cold and damp Yorktown, Virginia where I am restoring a 1936 Rover 12.

Where does one purchase distributor points and condensor?

I am working with Mike Evans for small body bits.

Do you know if anyone has made a tracing of or has the dimensions for the sliding portion of the "Sunshine Roof" as mine has gone South.

I'll feed you the car's particulars and you can add it to your database as I am now in RSR with only my 1969 TC listed.

Roverly,

Tom Copes

Mike Couldry's Meteor Supplies will no doubt have some

Other specialists will have these too if you have the Lucas part number and armed with this they turn up on Ebay too. I assume your car has the DK4A in which case the contact set is 400415 which is quite common as is the condensor which again is common to the DK4A - I will try to find my spare!

You are well advised to get a spare Bakelite baseplate again off Ebay as these can crack/track - mine stripped its CB securing screw which earths inside the plastic - this caused an occasional backfire on overrun and total failure when hot eventually.

These may help too as they do know a lot about Lucas dizzies

Regarding the distributor. I've verified that my model no. is a DK4A. I've linked to the URL you sent and I'll work with them for spares. Thanks.

Now, new subject - Okay, I give up. What is a Bakelite baseplate and what does it do? Where does it go?

Handwriting on the wall says Tom, get the RSR Book. Then, perhaps you can answer your own questions.

Thanks again.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum Andrew and Tom.

Andrew, what information do you keep in the 'Archive database' ?

Tom, as Phil already said Mike Cauldrey is the person for points and condenser, I have just bought some for my 1947/16

The baseplate is brown Bakelite and fits between the metal dizzy body and the cap. The points and internal condesor sit on it and are fixed with said screws and earthed by internal straps. Its round with a falt projection to match the cap.

The plate is same for 4 and sixes and this dizzy was fitted to alot of British cars eg Austins in the 1930's - it was supereded vy vac advance models in addition to either teh manual and/or automatic centrifugal advance yours would have. Please post soem pics of it ;)

Re: RSR archive data base

Hello there John
The pre-1950 database that I maintain for the RSR basically contains the year/type/model of each car together with its registration number/chassis number/colour of body and interior and its current general condition (A to G asper application/renewal form), I would say about 50 percent are condition F or G ie under restoration/off the road.
It also shows current owner and town he lives in plus the same info of any previous owners that I am aware, in a few instances as many as 10 previous owners. I make a note of any relevant history/mileage/details of the car that owners give me.
Regards
Andrew

Hello there Tom
Await your car details for database.
Re sunshine roof I am not aware of measurements for the 1936 12 models so cannot help but hopefully someone else may be able to come up with them??? alternatively Mike Couldry or Mike Evans may be able to help.
regards
Andrew

Andrew,
What I would like to know is why condition "A" is for original and condition "B" is for restored when a restored car can be better than an original car.

Also can you tell me how many 16ss there are (1) in total (2) on the roads. I have been told there are 25 left of which only 10 are still on the road, is this correct?

Good morning John
The A to G classification of members cars goes back before my time, so I can't help you on that point.
Re 16ss from the archive records I can advise following numbers
1937 16 cars known 9 on the road - 1938 16 cars known 7 on the road - 1939 19 cars known 7 on the road - 1940 3 cars known 1 on the road - 1946 11 cars known 6 on the road - 1947 62 cars known 28 on the road. About 10 of the 1946/47 models belong to overseas members.
These figures confirm what I said in my earlier message namely for all models about 50 percent are F or G and off the road and sadly some of these cars just seem to dissappear in the course of time.
Also as some of the information on the database can be out of date as it includes cars we have not heard about for 10 or more years the above figures should only be considered as approximate.
Regards
Andrew
