Whether it is possible or not, I don't know but the two cars are different lenghts. The 16 is some 4 inches longer than the 12

Definitely not they may look similar but have many different dimensions in fact any pre-war body of even the same model is not identical as they are unique hand-built with a lot (comparatively) of timber framing some of which is structural. This gradually disappears later on in the decade but 1939 model 16's like mine still have some. Even the two sides are not true mirror images. The doors which may also be timber framed are made to fit the openings

The 1940-47 "all" steel bodies for each model are far more consistent as to sizes but 4 pot and 6 pots and Sports and Saloons have very few common panels

Anything can be made to fit though!

I chickened out of replacing a rotten '39 16 saloon body tub although I had just acquired a decent 46/47 12 saloon.
They can probably be made to fit, but as has been mentioned, the 4 pot cars are shorter. Of the 8 body to chassis mounting points -(2 in the boot floor, Front and rear of chassis each side and bulkhead each side), boot and Front and rear body mounts align however. The difference is most apparent at the bulkhead, as the bulkhead mount is some 3 inches further back on the 12 than the 16. In fact I came to the conclusion that the only way this could work was to retain and repair the 16 bulkhead, drill out the spot welds and separate the body at the bulkhead. The same operation would be carried out on the 12 and a body swop would take place.

It never happened and I sold both vehicles. In fact the 16 is back on the road having had a body swop, this was from a '47 6 light car I believe that had suffered a bent chassis in an accident.

all I can say is good luck

Mike
