Oil filter

I do apologise if this is rather an elementary question. I want to remove and clean the sump mounted oil filter on my P2 16. I have tried undoing the filter but it seems very tight. I don't want to force it, but is it to be expected for it to be reluctant to budge? I have got a replacement copper ring for when the filter is refitted.

I may be being over cautious but don't want to damage anything.

Sometimes it is, especially if not removed for a very long time. Use the proper box spanner: 1/2 W.
