Headlining

I need to replace the headlining on my 1939 14 Sports Saloon. I am doing the section from the windscreen back including the hole for the sunroof. Does anyone have a pattern I could use to cut the fabric?

Hi Colin,

I am in the middle of replacing the headlining in my 46 14 SS at the moment. I have the old cloth from the front section plus some photos. I am assuming that the 46 is similar to the 39 installation but there can be many differences between models and years. I think that the front section is reasonably straightforward certainly in terms of the pattern; it is the rear section that seems to me to be the greater challenge. I was kindly supplied with some photographs of the headlining in a 1947 Sports Saloon but this proved to be significantly different to the earlier cars.

I need to hang on to it just at the moment but if you aren't too far away you would be welcome to come and have a look at it. if you let me have contact details I can ping you some photos or I could post you a paper pattern. Any use?

Thanks Richard, I think a paper pattern would be worth a try. I will probably do a trial run with some cheap material cut from your pattern first.

Hi Colin,

I will have a go at making a paper pattern for you either Sunday or early next week. I think it highly likely that our cars are very similar in this aspect. I think that you are sensible to use some cheap material first for a trial run and I think that you will find the front section rather easier than the rear as the material is mostly fairly flat and no compound curves to contend with. I think that Steve is right; with care and patience you can get good results. I have just finished replacing the rear section on my car and will be having a go at the front fairly soon.

Please be aware that the headlining in the post war cars is attached differently to that of the pre war cars.
The post war cars headlining is attached by wire hoops on the piece behind the sunroof .
Also the the roof and sunroof are different from a saloon and a sports saloon.

This is true of the 1947 models only. My 1946 14 SS is the same as the pre war models. I confirmed this with some photographs of the headlining of a local to me members 1947 16 SS and this had the metal hoops and the cut outs where they fitted. in my car, the headlining is glued to the felt lining the metalwork and plywood panels and there is no provision for the metal hoops at all.

Richard, The pattern arrived but it is quite different to the shape of my car! My sunroof is wider and the whole roof seems wider too. So, thanks for going to all that trouble but to no avail. After an attempt to fit some cheaper material as a test I think this is one for the professionals!
