Hi, It sounds like your spare is a later diff. check your early diff. the top bolt hole will be at 12 o'clock, and approx. 10½" flange to flange
The later diffs. and axles have the top bolt hole a whisker before at 2 minutes to 12. and are approx. 9-1/8" flange to flange.
If it wont fit your car 4.88 ratio is sort after by Land Rover men.
There is a 1936 4.88 to fit your car for £15 on eBay.
cheers Jeff

Hi, If you take off the rear hub cap and the halfshaft has a thread and nut on the end
then its definitely a 6 spline fitting halfshaft to diff.
ps. Im looking for another P4 3.9 diff. if anybody's selling one.
thanks Jeff.

I've uploaded a couple of pics of the diff, with the top bolt at 12'o'clock. It has 10 1/2" flange to flange approx. I'll post 'em up once I remember how I did it last time!

Hi,
I've tried to work this out, (please let me know if ive got it wrong).
Based on 17" wheels with 27½" diameter tyres as on my 35 / 14 hp.

Diff. ratio 5.22 = 15.67 mph @ 1000rpm or 47.01 mph @ 3000rpm

4.88 = 16.77 or 50.29 @ 3000 rpm
4.7 = 17.41 or 52.22
4.3 = 19.03 or 57.08
3.9 = 20.98 or 62.94
Only the first two are able to fit straight in your existing axle.
You will see that by fitting a 4.3 my early 14 was happy at 3000 revs. & 57 mph
to keep up with HGVs on motorway trips, and was more economical.
thanks Jeff.
