Hello from Portugal!

Post by Jacinto » Sun Jul 24, 2011 2:33 am

My name is André Jacinto, I am 17 years old (almost 18), and I am a long-time fan of the viking badge.

I was born in South Africa, and when I got out of the maternity, I went in this beautiful Rover SD1 (2600)

It was my dad's.

He also had lots of Minis, and he brought a Mini Van he had in Africa, when we came to Portugal. It is currently on a restoration process.

My aunt bought a Mini when she came to here. It was a Portuguese exclusive version, called IMA.

It is in a very poor state, but I didn't gave up on it! Sooner or later she will return to the roads.

Later on, my dad bought a sorry-looking, mechanically ruined Montego 1.6 LS Estate.

It overheated, and had a HGF. Still, it was used and abused until it died. Then, we rebuilt the engine, but the man who took care of the head did a very bad job on it, and so, the gasket went again. Now we delivered it to a trusted company.

We are just waiting for a new gasket!

Later, my dad bought a Rover 416 Tourer, as my brother crashed my dad's car, a Honda Concerto 1.4 GL (twin carb). This was the result.

Finally, my first car.
It was bought back in 1987 by my grandad. When he passed away it was delivered to my mom, who hasn't been taking care of it. So, I said that I wanted to stay with the car for me, I wanted to preserve it.

I am talking about this Rover 213SE.

It has 206 000km (over 120 000miles), and 1000kms ago the engine started do complaint about it. Honda dealers weren't able to get the parts I needed to rebuild the engine, so, my dad decided to take advantage of the wrecked Concerto, swaping the D13 with the D14A1.

This was it:

The old D13

The new D14A1 (don't mind the circle near the air filter box)

Cheers.

Hi Andre,
Welcome to the club - It looks like you really are a born Rover enthusiast! I have been interested in Rovers a long time but not quite as long ago as when I was 17 - It was Minis then.
My wife is Portuguese and I am always looking out for Rovers when I go - It's interesting to see how many Rover 213's you still see in Portugal - I guess the weather preserves them better than here where they are now quite rare. We go to the Coimbra and Covilha areas and sometimes Aveiro. It's my ambition to drive all the way there one day but the petrol bill puts me off at the moment - I run a Rover 75 V6 and am restoring a pre war Rover 10.
Good luck with the 213.

regards

Neal

Thank you!

Yes, I was admired, the first time I was told that 213s are rare in the UK.

Still, they are disappearing, unfortunately. And you never see young people driving them - usually, they are kept by their first owner. Mine would be, if it had power steering. This was why my granddad bought another car, in 2003. But he always loved this car.

If everything goes as planned, I am going to live and study in Coimbra!

Here we don't have many Rovers (or MGs) V6, as it seems that "we" (I'm not included on that package) love diesel engines (mainly because, well, gasoline prices in here were always very, very high, and now things are getting worse), so, most of 75s are powered with the BMW engine. In the MG-Rover Club of Portugal, we only have two 75 V6s.

A Rover 10, that's nice! Unfortunately, the oldest Rover I ever saw was a P6, from 1971, I guess.

Sooner or later, I will have to go to the UK. I never been there, but always wanted to.
